Why Most Retreads Don’t Cut It

Most wide-base retreads use a precure process, where a pre-molded strip of tread rubber is applied to the casing. While common, it’s not ideal for wide-base tires.

In the ready-mix industry, truck tires carry heavier loads, generate more heat, and face rough terrain every day. That means they require stronger bonding, better casing uniformity, and more consistent performance—areas where precure retreads are inherently limited.

Here’s where precure falls short:

1. Precure tread is applied as a flat strip onto a round casing

That mismatch alone creates stress in the bond, making it harder for the tread to fully adhere—especially under heavy loads and constant start-and-stop conditions.

2. Most precure tires include 1–3 splices where the tread is joined together

These splices create built-in weak points that can lead to uneven wear, balance issues, and failures under load.

3. Precure doesn’t account for natural variations in casing diameter

Two tires in the same dual assembly can differ by as much as ¾ of an inch. Because the precure process doesn’t correct for this, one tire can end up carrying more of the load, increasing the risk of blowouts.

4. Standardized precure tread widths often don’t match the casing

Many precure manufacturers use a standard-width tread across multiple casing sizes to save on material costs. For wide-base applications, that often means the tread is too narrow, causing excessive strain on the casing shoulders and leading to premature failure.

5. Precure bonds two finished materials together. 

Trying to bond two finished pieces of rubber together can create areas where the materials don’t fully bond. This can lead to more weak spots and separation over time.
