According to TRIB Managing Director David Stevens, these changes are also pushing the market toward better tire quality. Fleets are moving away from low-cost, low-quality imports and returning to premium tires that are designed for multiple retreads—maximizing ROI and long-term reliability.
“The additional tariffs have encouraged customers and fleets that may have shifted to low-cost, low-quality, ‘one-time-use’ tires to come back to retreading,” Stevens explained in an article about the impact of tariffs on U.S. retreaders.” An investment in a quality tire that can be retreaded multiple times delivers the best return on investment and lowest total cost of ownership.”
Remanufacturing (or retreading) extends tire life by replacing only the tread as it becomes worn, allowing fleets to reuse their premium casings multiple times, save money, reduce waste, and keep their tires on the road up to 500% longer than single-use imports. Nearly 90% of large U.S. fleets already use retreads, and smaller fleets are following suit, recognizing that retreads are not just cost-effective, they’re a strategic investment.
